Shop Favorite: Williamsburg Oil Paints

With intriguing colors such as Persian Rose, King's Blue, Egyptian Violet, Veronese Green, Italian Pink, Bohemian Green Earth and Spanish Earth, it was hard for us to resist stocking the artist grade Williamsburg Handmade Oil Colors on our shelves.  Alongside all the exotic colors, you can also find cadmiums, ultramarines and cobalts, as well as a wide assortment of earth colors. Williamsburg Oil Colors are ground to enhance the beauty and luminosity specific to each particular pigment. Some paints will feel slightly gritty; some extremely smooth. Cerulean Blue has a beautiful velvet light-absorbing surface with an extremely strong covering power; Siennas are often gritty to allow light to travel through the vehicle exposing rich golden or mahogany undertones. Each tube has a sample of the luscious paint brushed right onto its' handmade label, convenient for seeing and feeling the textures for yourself.

"The guiding force behind Williamsburg Handmade Oil Colors is its founder, the late New York artist Carl Plansky. An expert paint maker for years, Plansky had an unerring instinct for locating the finest pigments. His philosophy was to use the best pigments available and keep the mixture simple.

A few colors are unique to Williamsburg, such as Turkey Umber made from a rare, greenish earth pigment found only in Turkey, and Zinc Buff, the world's only raw, "unbleached" zinc white. This especially soft, transparent white produces a very useful opalescent pink when scumbled and glazed. Williamsburg also has several interesting composite colors, such as Payne's Gray Violet, a deep gray-purple, and Courbet Green, one of Carl Plansky's personal favorites; it is a gorgeous, dark earthy green that's excellent for producing deep, lustrous shadows.

Williamsburg Paints are ideal for artists who work large or who want a stiffer, handmade feel to their oils. They are great for anyone who paints in a very direct way."
